Hope Stethoscope

James Hope graduated the University of Edinburgh in 1825. He was first introduced to auscultation as a house physician at the Royal Edinburgh Infirmary in 1824. Hope traveled to Paris in 1826 to further his medical education with Professor Chomel, the successor to Leannec at Hopital de La Charité. Returning to London in 1828 eventually became professor at St. George’s hospital. Hope was a proponent of the use of the stethoscope, which was slow to be accepted in England. He enhanced the use of the stethoscope by awarding an annual prize to students who demonstrated exceptional of mediate auscultation with use of the stethoscope.
